Case Study – Neue Heimat Tirol | Student Housing with Shower Heat Recovery in Innsbruck, Austria

One of Austria’s most advanced student housing projects integrates 40 Recoup ShowerPipes to recover shower wastewater heat and reduce domestic hot water energy demand

Project Details

Project type: Residential project for young people and students.

Project location:  Innsbruck – Austria

Completion: 2026

Product: 40 VX 2100 showerpipes

Partner: Robin Heat

Project Back ground

As part of this new residential development in Innsbruck, Recoup ShowerPipe systems have been integrated to recover heat from shower wastewater. The solution is expected to significantly reduce domestic hot water energy demand while improving the overall energy performance of the building.

Key Results

>50%
heat savings during shower operation

20-25%
Reduction in total DHW energy demand

40
Recoup Showerpipe VX2100 installed

System Concept

The system is based on a decentralized wastewater heat recovery solution integrated into a high-efficiency domestic hot water installation. Wastewater heat is recovered directly from the showers and reused to improve overall system efficiency.

 Hydraulic Concept (Scheme A)

  • Preheating of the cold-water supply to the thermostatic mixing valve and the

          freshwaterstation.

  • Highly efficient overall system configuration.

Project Status & Monitoring

Following completion, detailed performance monitoring will be carried out in cooperation with the Passive House Institute and the University of Innsbruck to validate system efficiency, energy savings, and long-term operational performance.

Expected Performance

  • More than 50% heat savings during shower operation.
  • Approximately 22–25% reduction in total energy demand for domestic hot water preparation, including additional hot water consumers and system-related losses (e.g. circulation losses).

Funding

The project has been submitted under the Tyrol State Housing Subsidy Program (Wohnbauförderung Tirol).
