Proven Energy Savings in Student Housing

The Uilenstede Student Accommodation project demonstrates how shower waste water heat recovery can significantly reduce domestic hot water energy demand in high-density residential buildings.

Each apartment is equipped with a dedicated shower heat recovery system, allowing heat from shower wastewater to be recovered and reused before it enters the drainage system.

The project forms part of a long-term monitoring programme designed to validate real-life performance.

System Design

The development combines 102 vertical ShowerPipe systems with 8 horizontal Shower Trays, allowing the most suitable solution for each apartment layout.

Each student studio is connected to a central district heating network via an individual Heat Interface Unit (HIU).

Heat recovered from shower wastewater is used to preheat incoming cold water, reducing the energy required for domestic hot water production.

All WWHR units are installed in dedicated service compartments that are easily accessible from communal corridors.

Long-Term Monitoring

The project is part of a 10-year monitoring programme.

Detailed monitoring equipment has been installed in ten apartments to evaluate:

  • Heat recovery efficiency
  • Domestic hot water energy savings
  • Long-term operational performance
  • System reliability

After the first two years, the monitored systems achieved an average measured efficiency of 58%, with overall domestic hot water energy savings exceeding 40%.
