Case Studie – Residential project France

Project Details

Project type: Residential, individual house

Project location: France

Planned Completion: 2025

Product: Vertical Waste Water Heat Recovery (VX2100)

Partner: Evolsys

Project Back ground

Domestic hot water production is one of the largest energy consumers in residential buildings. In this project, the goal was to reduce electricity consumption for hot water while maintaining comfort for the occupants.

To improve energy efficiency, a vertical wastewater heat recovery system (WWHR) was installed on the shower drain. This technology recovers heat from warm wastewater and uses it to preheat incoming cold water.

System & Technical Solution

A ShowerPipe vertical shower heat recovery unit was installed in the house. The system captures heat from the outgoing shower water and transfers it to the incoming cold water supply.

During operation, the heat recovery unit quickly increases the temperature of the incoming water.

Measurements show that:

  • Incoming cold water initially enters at approximately 6°C

  • After only a few seconds of operation, the preheated water temperature reaches around 26°C

This significantly reduces the energy required to heat water to the desired shower temperature.

The combination of system changes significantly improved overall energy efficiency.

The total electricity consumption for hot water production in the house was reduced by a factor of 2.7.

Energy savings were achieved through several factors:

  • 40% from eliminating storage and distribution losses

  • 15% from reducing shower flow rate

  • 43% from heat recovery using the ShowerPipe system

The passive heat recovery system recovers a large share of the thermal energy that would otherwise be lost through wastewater

Benefits of Shower Wastewater Heat Recovery
  • Significant reduction in energy consumption for hot water

  • Lower electricity costs for residents

  • Passive system with no moving parts

  • Continuous heat recovery during shower use

  • Suitable for residential buildings and social housing projects

Conclusion

Wastewater heat recovery from showers offers a simple and effective way to improve energy efficiency in residential buildings. By capturing heat that would otherwise be lost through the drain, systems like ShowerPipe can significantly reduce energy demand for domestic hot water.

With measurable energy savings and a straightforward installation, shower heat recovery is an effective solution for energy-efficient housing projects across Europe.
